How To Break A Sugar Addiction

Do you know you can be addicted to sugar, just the same way as you can be addicted to nicotine? Consuming sugar is absolutely one of the worst things you can do for your health. It prematurely ages you, causes chronic conditions like diabetes, and drives inflammation. To increase our health, we need to decrease our sugar intake.

Just like cocaine, sugar activates centers in the brain to make you crave more. When you start to get off it, you’re unfortunately going to get headaches, dizziness, and fatigue. Quitting an addiction is not easy, by any means. Worse still, sugar is basically in everything nowadays, making it very hard to avoid. But here is the good news! Those symptoms like headaches and fatigue won’t last long. It takes about three days for your body to adapt to not getting its “expected” amount of sugar. So there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

To quit sugar, you need to be able to identify sugar, and that can be trickier than it sounds. It hides in so many products, many of which you wouldn’t think of as loaded with sugar. There are 50+ different names that sugar is called on packaging, most of them ending with “-ose”. If you check a package and one of the ingredients in it ends in “-ose”, chances are that there is sugar in it.

One of the best thing that you can do to break a sugar addiction is to make lateral moves. That is, instead of going cold turkey, try replacing your sugary treats with similar snacks. If you drink a lot of soda, try switching over to carbonated water with a twist of citrus. If you love chocolate, switch over to dark chocolate sweetened by stevia. These lateral moves will still fulfill your sweet cravings and make the process a little easier for you.

Other methods you can use to break your sugar addiction is to balance your insulin levels, get the nutrients that you need for your body to properly regulate your blood sugar, and, most importantly, you want to make sure that you improve your gut health. Problems like yeast overgrowth can greatly contribute to sugar addiction. A high quality probiotic really supports this process and will make the no sugar transition so much easier for you. A healthy gut is a must for a healthy life.

So, if you want to break sugar addiction, that is how you do it. By following all of the strategies in the video below, you will be well on your way to beating your body’s reliance on sugar! In this video were talking about how to break a sugar addiction. This is a really big deal because you probably have seen my other videos and heard me talk about how sugar prematurely ages you. It causes all types of chronic conditions like diabetes, it drives inflammation which leads to conditions like heart disease and cancer. Anyway, when we want to increase our health we have to decrease our sugar intake.

Sugar is directly correlated with so many health crises that people face today. The average person actually consumes over 100 lbs. of sugar. This is 26 more times that people consumed 100 years ago. Anyway, you get the idea so it is very important that we take this sugar problem and that we work to reduce and break our sugar addiction.

A lot of people are probably like, “well you really don’t understand this problem because breaking a sugar addiction is really hard and you have never been there.” And truthfully, I grew up just like everybody else on a Standard American Diet, eating a lot of carbs, drinking a lot of sodas, eating candy bars and really not paying attention to my sugar intake. So, when I decided to pivot and start living a healthy lifestyle sugar addiction was a big problem for me.

One of the big reasons it’s a big problem when you decide to come off it is because sugar acts like a drug on the body. Just like cocaine it activates a lot of the same centers in the brain, that make you crave more and when you actually break this sugar addiction typically you are going to get some different symptoms. You’re going to get some headaches, you are going to get like dizziness and shakiness, fatigue and crashing’s. So, anyway, breaking that sugar addiction is not easy by any means. When it comes to breaking it I’m going to tell you it will be a little bit of a tough time but what I am going to identify is how you can do it and make this process much easier using many of the same strategies i use with clients I work with.

So first let’s talk about identifying sugar. So, this is important because if we are consuming sugar on the daily unknowingly then what is going to happen is were going to continue to crave it. The more you eat, the more you crave sugar. So, when we look at how to identify it first look to our carbohydrates. So, if were eating lots of white pastas, if were eating a lot of bread, if were consuming rice these sorts of carbohydrates they are breaking down as sugar and they are just really going to cause this sugar addiction thing to be continuous. So, we have to break that carb cycle and eating excess carbs if we want to break this sugar addiction. The next biggest thing we have to look out for is that there is 50+ names that sugar is labeled as. Many of them end in -ose so high fructose corn syrup, fructose, dextrose, look at those “oses” and they come in all these different names basically to hide it in the package mainly so that people don’t understand what their looking at and unknowingly consume large amounts of sugar when their trying not to. So, we have to be able to identify those names there.

When we’re looking to remove sugar from our diet the best thing that we can do in order to help with this whole process is try to make lateral moves okay. So, when you are coming off soda for instance look to sparkling water. Then when you are coming off sweets or candy, you can use stevia sweetened chocolate so that you are not raising your blood sugar and you are still filling that sweet craving. Okay, so try to make those lateral movements to try and make this process a little easier for you because sugar acts like a drug and when you break that sugar addiction you are going to get cravings, you are going to get symptoms of blood sugar crashes, you are going to get fatigued and possible headaches but the good news is it is only going to last a little over three days. So, when you break this cycle there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

Next big thing that we can do here is we can change the way that we are eating. When we look at a lot of these different shakes that are available to balance our blood sugar. One of the things that the good quality ones actually have in them are fat, protein and fiber. Ok, so increasing our fat intake and eating moderate amounts of protein and increasing our fiber intake is going to help balance that blood sugar, it is going to help balance that insulin and that is really key when we’re looking at breaking the sugar addiction and balancing insulin out by consuming these types of food is really, really important. So, make sure you’re adding that to your list of things to do.

Next here is nutrients, so we want to make sure were using proper nutrients to break this sugar addiction and make this process as easy as possible. When we look at the nutrients here they do a couple things, they support glucose metabolism. They also support insulin activity, and insulin sensitivity. So, the first one on our list that we want to use is B complex. B complex is going to be very important and it is not about taking a particular b vitamin, it’s taking all the b vitamins. B1,2,3 and so forth and it is going to really help. Chromium is going to really help with the impact that glucose has on the body. So, if we want to balance that blood sugar chromium is a very powerful mineral that is going to support that. Now, cinnamon is a very important in this whole process and balancing the glycemic impact that meals have on your body. So, using cinnamon is powerful as well in this whole process, now the next is two powerful antioxidants that also support the glucose metabolism, insulin sensitivity and insulin activity, that is green tea and alpha lipoic acid. So, when you want to break that sugar addiction, balance out those insulin levels add these different nutrients to your daily intake and it’s really going to help you in that process.

The last thing I want to mention here is gut health. When it comes to breaking the sugar addiction it is so important to look at the microbiota referring to the ecosystem within the gut. When we look at even diabetics for instance, they always have problems with their microbiota. They also always just have problems with their gut and its entirety. So, when we go looking at reversing diabetes we always look at gut health, but when we look at breaking sugar addiction we also look to gut health because problems such as yeast overgrowth or pathogenic overgrowth is all going to lead to this sugar addiction cycle. The way we can work to break this sugar addiction by healing the gut health is working to heal the gut lining and we can also use things such as Probiotic Strength, which is a powerful probiotic that is going to go in and help bring down those yeast levels and bring down those bad bacterial levels and support a good healthy microbiome within the gut here.

So, if we want to break this sugar addiction, this is how you do it. Implement these different strategies right here and you’re going to find that you get great results with breaking your sugar addiction and when you break that sugar addiction your health is surely on the rise.
